Study: E-mails, intranet top company-to-staff communications

San Francisco—The communication vehicles organizations most commonly use to engage employees and foster productivity are e-mail and company intranets, according to a new study from the International Association of Business Communicators and human resources consultancy Buck Consultants.

According to the groups' second annual “Employee Engagement Survey,” which produced 900 respondents, 83% of companies use e-mail to engage with their own employees, and 75% post communications on their internal intranet systems.

The online study, conducted in April and May, also found that nearly half of all employers use Facebook, instant messaging and Twitter to disseminate company news and anecdotes to employees.

While increasing productivity (66%) and retaining top talent (65%) are the most important goals employers cite to keep employees engaged, the study also found that 32% of survey respondents indicate their organizations rarely or never conduct employee-listening activities.
