Study: Online community, e-mail budgets rose in 2009

Portland, Ore.—Almost half of marketers increased their budgets for online community creation and management, and 66% increased budgets for e-mail marketing last year, according to a study from digital agency eROI Inc.

EROI’s “Online Marketing Trends: What Worked in 2009 and What to Expect in 2010,” based on an online survey of 678 marketers, reported that 85% of marketers said online marketing is increasing in importance. E-mail and social media are high on marketers’ priority lists. The survey found teams are spending 32% of their time on e-mail campaigns and 15% on social media efforts.

Underscoring the importance of social media marketing, nearly one-third of new hires in 2009 were in social-facing jobs, according to the report.
