Stamford, Conn.—Smartphone sales hit 149 million units worldwide in fourth quarter 2011, a 47.3% increase from the year-earlier period, according to technology research and consulting company Gartner Inc. Total smartphone sales for 2011 reached 472 million units, up 58% from 2010, driven largely by the popularity of Apple Inc.'s iPhone. Apple, which sold 35.5 million iPhones in the fourth quarter, up 121.4% year over year, is now the world's leading smartphone vendor, with a market share of 23.8%, Gartner said. Sales of devices that run Google's Android operating system, available from multiple vendors, totaled 75.9 million in the fourth quarter, representing a 50.9% share of the smartphone market.
