Sun rolls out enterprise appliance

Published on .

New York--Sun Microsystems unveiled Wednesday the Sun Ray 1 enterprise appliance, which is intended to go head-to-head with the traditional personal computer. While the Sun Ray 1 has a PC-like monitor, its software is not contained in the PC, but in a centralized server that can be accessed by numerous Sun Ray 1 appliances. Sun, whose tagline is "The network is the computer," compares the technology to a telephone handset, which shields users from operational complexities such as call routing, security and administration. The release of the Sun Ray 1 is the latest step in Sun's emerging battle with Microsoft Corp., whose traditional approach has been to have its Windows and other software installed in PCs.
