Published on .

Framingham, Mass.—Tablet computers running Google's Android operating system made gains in the third quarter, with various manufacturers making up ground on Apple Inc. and its dominant iPad, according to marketing research company International Data Corp. IDC's “Mobile Device Tracker” report said shipments of tablets using the Android OS by Amazon.com, ASUSTek Computer, Lenovo Group and Samsung Electronics helped drive Apple's tablet market share down to 50.4% in the third quarter, from 65.5% in the previous quarter. Samsung was second in tablet market share, at 18.4%. Total global tablet shipments hit 27.8 million units in the third quarter, up 6.7% from the second quarter and 49.5% from the year-earlier period.
