Tablet shipments to overtake laptops

Published on .

Santa Clara, Calif.—Worldwide tablet computer shipments are expected to total more than 240 million units this year, up 64% over last year, according to a report by market research company NPD DisplaySearch. According to the company's “Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report,” the tablet market, dominated by Apple Inc.'s 9.7-inch iPad, will see smaller tablets grow in popularity. Those 7-to-8 inch tablets are expected to account for 45% of overall tablet sales this year. North America remains the largest market for tablet computers, at 35% of global sales, with China second at 27%. In both markets, tablet computer shipments had already surpassed laptop sales last year, NPD DisplaySearch said.
