Thomas Fogarty worked with the design and editorial teams at Vance Publishing Corp. to streamline work flow and prepare the company to expand the digital footprint of its salon, wood interiors and food portfolios. “We have upgraded to a new content management system and, to be able to fully take advantage of that CMS, it was a seismic shift for everyone,” Fogarty said. “The object was to unify the print work flow of Vance publications and to also develop a work flow to host print edition content online in the digital editions. We needed to transition the editors to an audience-first work flow and help reduce bottlenecks in print production.” Fogarty co-chaired a unified work flow committee that built a standardized process to replace disparate systems developed for individual publications. The transition included software upgrades to move all designers to the same version of Adobe InDesign and at the same time introduced editors to Adobe InCopy. The software partnership allows the design team to create templates that can be customized for each magazine brand and accessed by both editors and designers, facilitating the corrections process. “It cuts down on the back and forth,” Fogarty said. The new procedures will ease the strain of a shift to digital editions, a conversion that is reducing printing and postage costs, Fogarty said. “We are currently doing digital editions in our salon group and woodworking titles; and there are plans to roll out [more] digital editions in the coming months,” he said. “It will be rapidly coming at us.”
