Thomas Industrial to launch search engine

Published on .

New York--In the wake of Google’s highly publicized initial public offering, Thomas Industrial Network, the publisher of Thomas Register and Thomas Regional, has launched what it calls "the next generation industrial search engine." The new site, ThomasNet.com, merges the Thomas Register and Thomas Regional Web sites, which are databases of industrial suppliers, distributors and service providers.

Thomas is making a big bet that specialized vertical search will gain ground on broad search engines such as those on the Google, Yahoo! and MSN sites. "The future of business sourcing and search will be owned by and dominated by specialized Web-based sites that are designed, created and managed by sophisticated subject matter experts," said Eileen Markowitz, Thomas Industrial Network president, in a statement.
