Thomson reportedly set to put learning division on the block

New York—Thomson Corp. is preparing to put its Thomson Learning division in play, according to a report Wednesday in The Wall Street Journal.  A deal for the unit could bring more than $5 billion, the Journal article said.

A Thomson spokesman would not comment on the article.

Thomson Learning is one of world's largest providers of tailored learning programs. It serves secondary, post-secondary and graduate-level students, teachers and learning institutions in both traditional and distance learning programs.

The unit is Thomson’s second-largest in terms of revenue and operating income, after the legal and regulatory division, according to the Journal,

A sale of the learning division would be in keeping with Thomson’s strategy in recent years of shedding its print assets and refashioning itself as an information provider selling directly to business professionals.
