TiVo launches service to compile local TV ratings data

Published on .

Alviso, Calif.—Digital video recording company TiVo Inc. will launch a research tool to provide second-by-second ratings data on programs and commercials running in local U.S. markets.

The research service, called Stop|Watch Local Markets, will be introduced during the summer, prior to the fall TV season, according to the company. TiVo introduced a national ratings service in 2007.

The new service will be based on a daily, aggregated and anonymous random sample of as many as 25,000 TiVo subscribers in major markets, down to 5,000 users in smaller markets, the company said. TiVo has about 3.5 million subscribers in the U.S.
