Twitter acquires analytics start-up Hotspots

San Francisco—Twitter has acquired, a social analytics start-up, strengthening its services. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Hotspots has its roots in streaming video that aggregates such services as Netflix and Hulu while adding recommendations to viewers. The company has recently marketed itself as a social analytics company, with the tagline “social media intelligence you'll actually use.” A significant recent assignment was to analyze tweet volume for spots on this year's Super Bowl. Last month, Twitter extended its ad program for mobile devices, making its Promoted Tweets and Promoted Accounts ad units appear to users of mobile apps on iPhones and Android devices. In February, the company introduced its first self-serve ad platform, initially in a partnership with American Express Co. and aimed at small and midsize businesses.
