Twitter acquires text message company Cloudhopper

By Published on .

San Francisco—Twitter has acquired startup mobile-phone text messaging company Cloudhopper for an undisclosed sum.

Twitter said on its blog that it had been working with Cloudhopper for eight months in managing its outbound text messages, which currently total more than 1 billion SMS texts per month. Tweets sent via SMS text rather than the Web allow mobile subscribers who do not have Internet-ready smartphones to use Twitter.

Twitter said the acquisition of Cloudhopper, founded in 2008, will help it scale its service and connect directly to mobile carrier networks globally. This would be particularly important in countries where the use of regular cell phones far outstrips the use of Web-ready smartphones.
