Twitter begins inserting ads into individual streams

Published on .

San Francisco—Twitter has begun including advertisements in users' individual Twitter timelines for the first time since it introduced its Promoted Tweets paid ad platform in April.

Initially, Promoted Tweets only appeared at the top of search results on Twitter.com to users who typed in related search queries. Beginning today, Twitter is presenting these ads to users of the Twitter management and reader tool HootSuite, based on the people and products that the users follow.

HootSuite, which has about 900,000 users, will share in the ad revenue with Twitter. The program eventually will be introduced to other Twitter management tools and readers, and to Twitter.com. Initial advertisers include Starbucks Corp., Virgin Group and the energy drink Red Bull.
