Twitter offers ads attached to trending topics

San Francisco—Twitter, which in April rolled out its Promoted Tweets ad message platform, delivering ads based on the context of a search, now is offering a similar service connected to popular topics.

The service is called Promoted Trends. Walt Disney Co. is the first to pay for a trending-topic tweet, promoting its new “Toy Story 3” movie.

Promoted Trends appear along with organic trending topics, currently carried on the Twitter home page inside the right rail, but only if they break into the top 10. Clicking on one drives it to the top of a user’s Twitter home page, followed by organic tweets on that topic.
