Omaha, Neb.—The number of U.S. businesses grew by 17.4% between 1998 and 2003, although there was a small net decline in 2003, according to an analysis by business database compiler infoUSA.

There were just under 12.8 million U.S. businesses last year, up from 10.9 million in 1998 but down from 12.8 million in 2003.

On a state-by-state basis, infoUSA found the highest percentage of net growth in number of businesses the past six years occurred in southern and western states.
