U.S. Chamber of Commerce to launch Web portal aimed at small businesses

Published on .

Washington, D.C.--The U.S. Chamber of Commerce said Wednesday it will look to the Internet as the means to bring together 3,000 local chambers of commerce and the organization's 8 million members. It has accepted a $24 million investment from Raj Singh's Telcom Ventures to launch a Web portal- the first for-profit venture in the organization's 87-year history. Called ChamberBiz, and scheduled to launch in December, the site will generate revenue through advertising and joint marketing agreements. The portal aims to provide discount Internet purchasing services similar to those being developed by Fortune 500 companies, as well as content targeted at small businesses. Mr. Robert Perkins, a marketing executive recruited by the Chamber to develop its Web strategy, will head ChamberBiz.
