U.S. newspaper advertising drops for 17th consecutive quarter

Arlington, Va.—Total online and print advertising expenditures in newspapers declined 5.38% to $6.10 billion in the third quarter of this year compared with the year-earlier period, according to data released this week by the Newspaper Association of America. It marked the 17th straight quarter of decline for the beleaguered industry.

Print newspaper advertising fell 7.11% to $5.41 billion in the third quarter compared with the year-earlier period. Online advertising provided a bright spot: It increased 10.70%, to $689.79 million, in the same timeframe.
