New York-USA Today,
the flagship newspaper of Gannett Co. Inc., said it has laid off 100 people since the start of the year, or 5% of the staff for the nation's largest daily newspaper. Most of the staff cuts came in the newspaper's circulation department. In its first-quarter report Gannett said advertising revenue fell 20% at USA Today
compared with the year-earlier quarter. In a conference call, Gannett Chairman-CEO Douglas McCorkindale said Gannett was operating as if it's in or about to enter a recession.
