VeriSign acquires Illuminet for $1.2 billion

San Francisco--In an effort to become a major player in the emerging market for integrated voice and data systems, VeriSign Inc. plans to acquire Illuminet, which helps connect services for telecommunication carriers, in an all-stock deal worth $1.2 billion. Under the terms of the deal, VeriSign will exchange 0.93 share of its stock for each share of Illuminet. VeriSign, which provides Web addresses to businesses and individuals, will integrate its Web directory database, about 5 billion domain names, with Illuminet's telephony infrastructure.
