VerticalNet taps Amazon.com's Galli as president and CEO

Horsham, Pa.--In a blockbuster recruiting move, VerticalNet Inc. has hired Joseph Galli Jr., Amazon.com's high-profile president and COO, as its president and CEO. Mark Walsh, formerly VerticalNet's president and CEO, has been appointed chairman. Walsh replaces Doug Alexander, who becomes vice chairman. (Alexander is also CEO of Internet Capital Group unit ICG Europe.) Before joining Seattle-based Amazon.com in early 1999, Galli was president of toolmaker Black & Decker Worldwide, where he oversaw the company's expansion into Europe, Asia and Latin America.
