VNU posts higher earnings

Haarlem, Netherlands -- VNU, the Dutch publishing giant interested in acquiring Manhasset, N.Y.-based CMP Media, released its preliminary financial figures for 1998. Earnings before extraordinary items increased 29% between 1997 and 1998, jumping to about $255 million. Thanks to several acquisitions, VNU's Business Information USA division, which includes New York-based Bill Communications, upped its net revenue about 25% between 1997 and 1998 to about $660 million.
