VNU selling educational unit

Haarlem, Netherlands--VNU Communications Inc. has agreed to sell its educational unit to managers and the European investment company 3I Group plc, one of Europe's largest venture capitalists, for about $171 million. The deal includes LCG Malmberg and Utigeverij VanIn, which generate about $70 million a year in revenue and $15 million in operating profits. VNU said the buyers had agreed not to lay off anyone. The deal is expected to close within a month, pending regulatory approval. VNU is unloading its educational unit three months after it decided to focus on marketing and media information, business information and directories.
