BtoB's predecessor, Business Marketing, started the Web Price Index in 1996 as a real-world look at the cost of producing online content. Originally a survey of developers in several key cities (New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, and Atlanta) each version looked at a different aspect of Web development, such as database creation or e-commerce integration and, at times, full site development.
We created hypothetical marketers and detailed what they would need in terms of Web services. Those requests were sent to the participating developers, who then determined the prices they would charge those companies.
The results of the Web Price Index through the years can be found archived online at http://www.btobonline.com/wpi
