Worldwide mobile phone sales rise 42%

Published on .

Stamford, Conn.—Worldwide sales of mobile phones reached 419 million units in the second quarter, up 42.7% over the year-earlier period, according to a report from Gartner Inc. The report found smartphone sales accounted for more than a third of the total. According to "Market Share: Mobile Devices, Worldwide, 2Q12," in the smartphone OS market, Android devices led with a 64.1% share. While Apple's iPhone market share of smartphones grew year-over-year to 18.8%, it declined slightly quarter-on-quarter as users postponed their upgrade decisions ahead of the upcoming launch of the iPhone 5. Gartner said in a statement that the arrival of the iPhone 5, with a larger screen and other stylistic changes, will make a strong case for iPhone 4 users to upgrade.
