Yahoo to acquire Arabic Internet portal

Sunnyvale, Calif.—Yahoo Inc. has entered into an agreement to acquire the Arabic online portal, which Yahoo describes as the leading online community in the Arab world, with more than 16.5 million users.

Yahoo said the acquisition will enhance its ability to deliver relevant Arabic-language content and services, as well as Arabic versions of such services as Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo Mail, primarily to Internet users in the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Maktoob estimates that the Arab world’s online ad market stands at more than $40 billion and is growing 30% to 40% a year.

A purchase price was not disclosed.
