San Francisco--The small and medium-sized business market spends more than $75 billion a year on technology but has been an elusive target for technology marketers, according to a study by Yahoo! and Grey, San Francisco.

The report, which looks at the technology purchasing habits of the SMB market, found that while 88% of small and medium-sized businesses agreed it is important to keep up with technology trends, only one-third of businesses with between 20 and 49 employees have a full-time IT person.

The study also found that SMB decision-makers spend more than five hours a day consuming information from various media, including print, online, radio and TV. They spend the most time with the Internet, according to the study.

When asked what factors are “very important” when making technology purchase decisions, 90% of SMBs listed “reliability,” 83% cited “high quality” and 79% said they wanted the product to be “trustworthy.” The research was conducted by IDC.
