Moscow—Yandex, the Internet company that operates the largest search engine in Russia, has announced plans to compete directly against Google Inc. in emerging markets.
According to a report
from Reuters, Yandex said it will expand its search operations internationally using its own experts or possibly through acquisitions or partnership deals. The company said it will choose countries where Google has a 90% or greater market dominance, such as Turkey, and stress the benefits of choice and competition.
Yandex is the fifth-largest search engine worldwide, according to comScore, with more than 150 million searches daily. The company went public last year, raising $1.4 billion.
