How to Conduct a Proper Poll

The Politico's Jonathan Martin asks Dr. Scott Huffmon, the man behind a recent South Carolina poll showing Fred Thompson with a very narrow lead over Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney, to explain his method. Huffmon is happy to oblige and his answer sheds light on good (and bad) polling practices.

Interesting point: "Nearly all polls done in a few days call during the day. This little short cut is a big methodological no-no (although many commercial outfits do it and none talk about it). When you call during the day you WILL get an overrepresentation of retirees and stay-at-home moms in your sample. Period."
