The new contest will cover all forms of sales promotion, including retail marketing, environmental design and in-store advertising and media. The festival organizers said in a statement that Lions will be awarded for creative ideas for work designed to create immediate activation. Promo Lions will have its own jury and jury president.

PR next?
Last year, the festival added Radio Lions to the weeklong Cannes Lions. Another potential category that has been under consideration is public relations, but that hasn't been added for the 2006 festival, which will take place June 18-24 in Cannes, France.

The festival is also close to naming a CEO to take over for Terry Savage, who becomes chairman.

Press and outdoor
In other changes for 2006, the press and outdoor jury will be split into two separate juries, each with its own president. Since many agencies enter both print and outdoor executions of the same ad, the press and outdoor jury was judging a lot of the same work twice.

Also changing: The agency that wins the most Media Lions will be named Media Agency of the Year. There are already Agency of the Year awards for the other Cannes contests. Also, given the increase in media entries, in 2006 the Media Lions will be awarded for the first time as Gold, Silver and Bronze Lions, rather than just Media Lions.
