2010 saw the debut of Hulger's highly-covetable Plumen bulb, the twisty, curvy energy efficient light source co-created by Poke London co-founder/ECD Nic Roope, out of his design firm Hulger. The bulb has earned numerous plaudits in the design community, including a Design Award from the Design Museum as well as a spot in MOMA's collection.
Last week, Hulger announced the newest edition of the bulb, Plumen 002 on Kickstarter, which would require $25,000 in funding to put into production -- but it surpassed its goal in a matter of days, with more than $25,500 in the can.
Unlike it's predecessor, the Plumen 002 boasts more mellow lighting, perfect for adding moody ambience to an interior. It uses about 25% the energy required of an equivalent 30W incandescent bulb and features a sturdier-looking, yet just as sensual, curvy form compared with the Plumen 001. Hulger tapped Texas-based neon artist Tony Greer to explore possibilities for the bulb's new shape and drew inspiration from sculptors such as Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. The funding period for the project lasts through February 9 with first shipments to go out in July 2014.
