Mapquest: Vibe

Published on .

Direction site Mapquest is foraying into local tourism with the launch of Vibe, designed to help tourists figure out local experiences. The new site lets you pick a city and find out the "vibe" of its various neighborhoods, based on factors like how walkable it is, its edginess, shopping vibe and even things like how many Applebees it has around. Users can review and vote on neighborhoods they have visited. With this service, Mapquest is combining the hot sector of local reviewing site (see: Yelp) and its well-established as a trust company in the directions business. The service is now live in over 25,000 cities, and in the future, there will be a social aspect to it, where users can track friends and win badges.
