Royal Philips Electronics just unveiled an LED alternative to the 60 watt incandescent lightbulb, the 12 watt EnduraLED. The new bulb promised to provide up to 80% energy savings and last 25 times longer than its incandescent counterparts. EndurLED only uses 12 watt of power to deliver 806 lumens and exceeds the Energy Star specfications for the traditional 60 watt bulb. Philips estimates that use of the new bulb can potentially save 32.6 terawatt-hours of electricity a year, which is enough to power lighting in 16.7 million U.S. housholds—14.4% of all homes in the country. That would also eliminate generation of 5.3 million metric tons of carbon emissions a year.
