In post-game Super Bowl interviews Peyton Manning not once -- but twice -- said he was going to drink Budweiser. The shout-outs immediately prompted speculation on Twitter that the star quarterback of the winning Super Bowl team was paid to make the plug.
A spokeswoman for Anheuser-Busch InBev tweeted, however, that Mr. Manning was not paid.
Hi Internet. For the record, Budweiser did not pay Peyton Manning to mention Budweiser tonight. We were surprised and delighted that he did.— Lisa Weser (@LisaWeser) February 8, 2016
But Budweiser still seized on the mention on Twitter.
The brand also confirmed it was sending 50 cases of beer to the Broncos.
It's not the first time Mr. Manning has plugged an Anheuser-Busch InBev product. He gave Bud Light some love in a 2014 press conference.
Of course, NFL policy generally prohibits active NFL players from appearing in beer ads, so if Mr. Manning wants to take this to the next level, he really is going to have to retire.
