Even before he starts his new job on Jan. 5 as Uniqlo parent Fast Retailing's first global creative director in charge of product and store design, marketing, media and branding strategies, John Jay has a lifetime of experience in all those areas. Long a partner and iconic creative director at Wieden & Kennedy, the adventurous Mr. Jay opened the agency's office in Japan, where he helped launch Uniqlo.
"So from Day One at W&K, I presented concept shops, music, product ideas, packaging, events while given a brief that started with specific media," he said. "I built the Tokyo and Shanghai offices around that freedom and expertise."
Lately, he has pioneered W&K Garage in Portland, and will keep his separate J Studio consultancy. Mr. Jay noted that his global job will encompass all Fast Retailing's fashion brands -- Theory, J Brand, Helmut Lang, and Compton des Cotonniers as well as standout Uniqlo.
A lifelong culture maven, he said "My office is never just an office. It's a convertible gallery, and a space for symposiums. I'll re-create that in Portland and Tokyo [for Fast Retailing]."
