Sarah Koenig is the host of "Serial" -- and that makes her a podcasting star. "Serial," a spinoff of the podcast "This American Life," unfurls week-by-week, telling the story of a 1999 murder case in Baltimore. It's been downloaded and streamed more than 31 million times. Ms. Koenig is also the show's driving force, thanks to her exhaustive reporting and deep interest in the case.
The former Baltimore Sun reporter turned "This American Life" producer carefully guides the listener through each step of her investigation into whether Adnan Syed was wrongly convicted in the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. And her opinion of the case tends to shift from episode to episode.
"What grabbed me about this story is a friend of [Mr. Syed's] family came to me and said, I believe this guy is innocent," she told "The Colbert Report" host Stephen Colbert. "I started looking into it, and I just became so confused so quickly. I just kept going from there."
The season one finale was released Dec. 18 and there's plans for a second season.
