The Directors Guild of America today announced the 2001 nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials, a list that includes three-time DGA award-winner Joe Pytka and three first-time nominees. In addition to Pytka, this year's list includes Headquarters team Joe Public, MJZ's Craig Gillespie, Black Rocket creative director Bob Kerstetter, and Baker Smith of Harvest.

The team of Adam Cameron and Simon Cole -- aka "Joe Public" -- earned their second nomination based on several spots for 7Up via Young & Rubicam, and work on Visa and Cingular Wireless out of BBDO/New York. Craig Gillespie's first-ever nomination comes on the strength of work out of Fallon for Citibank and Holiday Inn, as well spots for SBC and Ameritech via Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. Fellow first-timer Baker Smith earned his seat with spots for four different client/agency pairs: Lucky Magazine and Black Rocket, Fox Sports and TBWA/Chiat/Day, Toshiba and DGWB, and Lowe and Heineken. Black Rocket's Bob Kerstetter, who directs via Tool of North America, landed his first nomination with a trio of spots for Black Rocket client Musco Olives. Pytka, who was last nominated in 1999, got back on the list with two "New York Miracle" spots -- "The Deli" and "Skating" -- from BBDO/New York, plus a Lion winning Disney spot for Leo Burnett and an Ad Council message from Bartle Bogle Hegarty.

The winner will be announced March 9 at the the annual DGA Awards Dinner in Los Angeles.
