The big-screen blast-off of Microsoft's best-selling Halo video game franchise has temporarily stalled on the launching pad, as Universal and Fox—the studios originally set to co-finance and distribute the Peter Jackson-produced blockbuster—have both jumped ship. A dispute over the level of profit participation to be received by the filmmakers and concerns over the sci-fi epic's burgeoning budget are rumored to be the primary reasons for the sudden split and slowdown in veteran commercials director Neill Blomkamp's first feature film. However, Jackson and Microsoft are already in talks with other studios, and pre-production at Jackson's Weta Workshop in New Zealand is expected to continue unabated.
