The 2007 International Design Excellence Awards (formerly known as the Industrial Design Excellence Awards) have been announced by the Industrial Designers Society of America. Gold, Silver and Bronze IDEA awards were handed out to 81 winners, including 30 international entrants, in a broad array of categories, ranging from Business & Industrial Products to Interaction Design to Student Designs. Among the judging criteria, in the ever-greening design world an important consideration this year for the jury of 18 design professionals was a project's environmental impact.

In addition, there was an encouraging increase in student participation this year — there were 240 student entries, compared to 101 in 2006. The jurors' selections for Best in Show as well as a People's Choice award will be announced at a ceremony at the Masonic Center in San Francisco on Oct. 20, during the Connecting '07 World Design Congress. Seen here are some Gold recipients, led by the Tesla Roadster, the Ecodesign winner — a high-performance, electric-powered sports car, which juror Franco Lodato, R&D division head at Pininfarina Extra USA, called, in a judges' statement, "a high-octane experience with low-voltage rush. The Tesla Roadster represents the best mix of innovation, environmental care and style."
