Kaminski Goes into Space

Two-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski has signed with L.A-based Space Program for exclusive commercial directorial representation. Best-known for his high profile work as the D.P. on Steven Spielberg films like Catch Me If You Can, A.I., Minority Report, and Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Kaminski also directed the film Lost Souls as well as visually-driven spots for VISA, Minolta, and most recently for Exxon Mobil and Lexus. He had been represented out of Chelsea Pictures for spots until the beginning of this year. "I was looking for new directions in my commercial work and I felt that going with a newer company may be more challenging because I could establish myself with that company as a leading director," Kaminski explains. "At Space Program there are fewer directors and being with a smaller company, I feel that that gives me a little bit more advantage because I may be more of a novelty, whereas with a larger company I'm just 'part of.'" Kaminski originally met the Space Program founders Bill Reilly and director Mike Bigelow as a D.P. on a Coca-Cola spot Bigelow directed. "I loved his energy and you can't get over the fact that the guy's an amazing DP and a genius," enthuses E.P. Reilly. "That we could get someone of this caliber for this company is enormous." Although the addition of Kaminski will raise the profile of the shop, both Reilly and Kaminski are aware and comfortable with the fact that Kaminski's hot features career may keep him out of the loop for extended periods of time. In fact, Kaminski says he's planning to lens another film for Spielberg come the fall. "We're seizing a moment with a guy who's a genius," Reilly notes. "For now, he's here at least until the end of October and that's really important."-Ann-Christine Diaz
