Lee Hunt, 3 Ring Circus vets launch Archipelago

Broadcast design veteran Lee Hunt and three alums of Hollywood's 3 Ring Circus have joined together to form Archipelago, an alliance of talent with offices in four cities: New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Denver. The company, based in Denver and headed by former 3 Ring Circus executive producer Lori Pate, bills itself as a solution to the large company model that dominated the broadcast design business until the demise of Pittard Sullivan and the January 1 reorganization of 3 Ring. "We had all been talking about the industry and about how the current big company model didn't seem to be working, and we started looking at other paradigms to see if there was a better way to do it," Pate says.

Archipelago's structure is like the chain of islands it's named for. The company will represent Jeff Boortz and Elaine Cantwell, former president and head of creative services at 3 Ring Circus, respectively, H Design founder Dale Herigstad and Lee Hunt. Hunt will be based in New York and Boortz in Philadelphia. Cantwell and Herigstad will both work out of L.A. Pate says she hopes the arrangement can provide the best of both the boutique and one-stop worlds. "The truth is when you're tiny, you still need to be able to do PR, you still need to be able need to do business development and marketing of your services," she says. "All of those services are what I provide to these smaller entities. The strength is that Archipelago provides the nucleus of those services -- plus everyone can work together on projects." According to Pate, the group's client list already includes Discovery, Cablevision and TNT.
