Apparently, rearing his smiling plastic head in TV spots and tabloid pics alongside Brooke Burke wasn't enough for Burger King's royal icon, as the King is set to invade the realm of video games. The silent-but-funny mascot will plant his flag in a trio of planned Xbox titles from Microsoft at the end of the year as part of a five-week BK promotion—hungry gamers will be able to get their hands on the games for a reported $3.99 a pop, plus the price of a value meal. It's a first for the video game industry, as no other major marketer has ever attempted to construct an entire mainstream console game—let alone three—around a company mascot, no matter how recognizable. Still, if there was ever a character in advertising who's simply screaming (so to speak) for a starring turn in a video game, the King is it.
But the question on all gamers' minds? Once control over the King is finally transferred to their Xbox controllers, what exactly will they be able to make him do? While specific game details are still to come, the genres of the three titles have been confirmed: shooter, fighter and racer. The shooter has been compared favorably to smash-hits like Halo and Destroy All Humans, while fighting classics like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat and racing favorites like Need For Speed and Forza Motorsport have been invoked in describing the other two releases. Until more information is released, we can surely satisfy ourselves with visions of the King mowing down enemy soldiers with a ketchup bazooka or wielding a pair of pickled nunchukas in a duel with a Whopperette.
