MTV2 Makes Ugly Beautiful

Published on .

All that’s hideous is actually beautiful in new spots for MTV2 that show some rather nasty bodily fluid in a lovely light. Cincinnatti-based motion design company Lightborne wrote, directed, produced and shot the three 30-second ID spots that are alternately gritty, gross and gorgeous. In “Beautiful Ugly 1,” a man wakes up hung over and vomits into a toilet, but the vomit comes out in glowing neon colors. Two others depict urine and dog poo as non-offensive rainbow animation that turns artsy 16mm footage into novel comedy. “MTV2 gave us the freedom to experiment with some very bizarre concepts and techniques,” says Lightborne animator/designer and owner Ben Nicholson. “They really allowed us to flex some creaetive muscle on both the conceptual and execution sides of the process.” (-Melanie Shortman)
