USA's Young Creatives Bound for Cannes

By Published on .

Tracey Smith and Nic Aldana of McCann Erickson/NY and Andrew Zolty of Agency.com have been chosen as the United States' representatives to the Young Creatives Competition at Cannes in June. Smith, hailing from Long Island, is an art director in McCann's TAG Ideation young-adult marketing group and includes Xbox and Verizon Wireless among her client roster. Aldana, a University of Texas ad school graduate, is an art director working with clients including MasterCard and Wendy's.

"What's really great is that they're homegrown McCanners," says Joyce King Thomas, chief creative officer of McCann Erickson New York. "They both started out as assistants in the creative department...all the assistants who wanted to be creatives did their portfolio and brought it in...three people were promoted and those were two of them." King Thomas didn't have much advice for her youngsters, other than to dress lightly—she's convinced they won't need much help. "They'll find an inventive way to solve the problem—I think that's what they both do."

Zolty, the interactive winner, is the second American interactive contestant in as many years. The print team beat out 49 other groups for the role, Zolty besting 10 interactive submissions. The runner-up print team includes Heather English and Beth Wetzel of Merkley + Partners.
