Vimeo has opened up the submission gates for its 2012 Awards and Festival, recognizing the best of the best in online video.
This year, the IAC-owned video website has added four new categories, bringing the grand total up to 13. The new categories are advertising, fashion, action sports and lyrical, the last one aimed at videos that showcase natural or personal experiences through techniques like slow motion or time lapse.
Droga5 Creative Chairman/Founder David Droga will judge the advertising category, while fashion photographer and director Nick Knight will judge the fashion category. Other notable judges include Stacy Peralta, the commercial and documentary director behind Dogtown and Z-Boys, Riding Giants and Crips and Bloods: Made in America and who directed Burger King's "Whopper Virgins" effort. He will judge the action sports category.
The inaugural awards, held in 2010, had nine winning films, including Eran Hilleli's "Between Bears." Israeli animator Hilleli has since worked on a W+K ad for Honda, "Blue Skies." This year, he will judge the animation category, along with fellow 2010 winner Gabriel Bisset-Smith, who will judge narrative. Plenty of last year's winners have a place on the judging table, including Eliot Rausch who recently completed work on Crispin's new Under Armour spots featuring Kemba Walker and Brandon Jennings.
"Since our inaugural event, we have watched online video explode into a primary medium for new talent discovery," Jeremy Boxer, director, said in a statement.
This year, each category winner will receive $5,000, with a $25,000 grand prize for one overall winner. Any original work that has premiered between July 31, 2010 and Feb. 20, 2012, can be entered at vimeo.com/awards.
