By Published on .

Webby judges like Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Virgin honcho Richard Branson, R/GA founder Bob Greenberg and film/TV mogul Harvey Weinstein will have a hefty load this year as they decide on which of the nominees will go home with the top honors.

The nominees, selected from 8,000 entries and 60 different countries, were announced on April 8. The judges, who make up the International Academy for the Digital Arts & Sciences, will decide on work spanning over 100 categories, including integrated, banner ad, website initiatives and mobile. Nominees in the advertising category include the site for the all-encompassing project for Halo 3 from McCann's TAG division and AKQA, the viral "Trevor the Intern" site from BBH, New York for Mentos, the ARG for Nine Inch Nails' Year Zero promotion courtesy of 42entertainment (below) and Bud's "Swear Jar" from DDB, Chicago in the online commercial category.

The criteria for winning work include the obvious content factor as well as interactivity, functionality, visual design and structure. The average fan can participate in the "People's Vote" section and select his/her favorite picks from the various categories by May 1 to help the judges determine the overall best work. The winners will be announced on May 6th, with the 12th Annual Webby Awards Gala to be held in NYC on June 10.
