Microsoft's 'IllumiShare' Combines Physical and Virtual Worlds

Published on .

Microsoft Research unveiled a jaw-dropping technology at TechForum 2012 that lets people interact with physical objects remotely.

IllumiShare features a lamp-like peripheral device that projects light onto a desktop. Anything that appears within the lighted space is projected onto the analogous space of a fellow IllumiShare user.

This setup allows users to interact with any physical object within the spaces: Think a chess game played with real pieces with someone across the world, or tutoring sessions with real ink and paper.
