Notes: Media billings are in millions of U.S. dollars. MindShare is the media-buying arm at WPP. Its U.S. figures in '99 represent buys made by JWT and O&M media operations since MindShare just began U.S. operations at the beginning of 2000. OMD Worldwide is the worldwide buying arm for Omnicom Group ( DDB, BBDO and TBWA). Omnicom's PhD rolls into one the media shops, Advanswers and Creative Media in the U.S., HYPN in Canada and New PhD in the U.K. Zenith Media Services is jointly owned by Cordiant Communications Group and Publicis Groupe as a result of Publicis' acquisition in 2000 of Saatchi & Saatchi, the previous half owner. Publicis is credited with half Zenith returns in the parent chart. (Cordiant falls just short of the top 10 with its 50% share of Zenith.) SFM Media/MPG is the U.S. convergence of Havas Advertising's SFM Media and Media Planning Group, Barcelona/Madrid. Optimedia, owned by Publicis, includes in totals its U.S. arm, DeWitt Media, bought in 2000. Tempus Group's CIA Medianetwork includes CPM, Chicago, bought in 2000. R. J. Palmer, owned by Panoramic Communications, was purchased in 1999. Worldwide billings by parent consolidates the various media service components: Aegis includes Carat (WPP Group owns 19% of Aegis); Interpublic Group of Cos. includes Initiative Media Worldwide (which also includes Media Inc. and Media Partnerships), Universal McCann, Cash Plus (the buying-planning unit of Campbell Mithun) and Clifford A. Botway Inc., the latter purchased in 2000; Omnicom includes OMD and PhD; WPP includes MindShare and Media Edge; Grey Global Group owns MediaCom; True North Communications comprises TN Media and KSL Media, bought in 2000; Bcom3 Group includes Starcom Worldwide ( Leo Burnett) and MediaVest Worldwide (D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles). The two operate as one abroad under the Starcom MediaVest Worldwide banner. Avenue A is an interactive shop specializing in media and technology. All acquisitions are treated pro forma as if on the books at full value for two consecutive years.
