We all have our top performers, those employees you can always count on when the going gets tough. Whether there's a tight deadline, a demanding client or a backlog of projects, you know you can count on your "A team" to consistently deliver quality work.
But are you relying too much on your top talent and headed for employee burnout?
Pick up any industry magazine covering over-servicing or burnout, and you'll get advice ranging from hiring temporary staff, to allowing more days off, to providing employees with wellness activities such as yoga to boost health and happiness.
But what is often overlooked is a simpler solution: Identify potential burnout before it happens and avoid it by distributing work in a smarter, more efficient way.
Having spent the better half of March tending to my brackets and watching dozens of college games, I'll use a basketball analogy here.
Benches are packed with good players for a reason: They can play the game, allowing coaches to avoid the risk of unnecessary injuries to their star players.
Agencies need to look at their staff the same way—don't risk burning out your top talent because you're afraid to play the bench.
Of course, all companies want to deliver the best work possible to their clients. But before each project, agencies should ask themselves: Does this require my star player or can I play the bench?
Being able to make that decision requires the insight to know whether you are faced with a pivotal project or if this is an opportunity that your bench can handle. To attain that clarity, you need the right tools to assess your pipeline, your resources and their capacity or overall utilization.
Companies must also weigh another consideration: How will bench players get the training they need if they never participate in key projects? Think of your bench employees as potential members of the A team. Are you giving them opportunities to learn the game and build experience?
With the right resource management and utilization solution, you and your project managers will have the necessary tools to manage your busy agency, ensuring that you are delivering the highest level of quality while staying in budget and on schedule.
Being able to assign talent more intelligently enables your resources to go further, resulting in several key improvements.
Members of your A team, now being used more effectively, will be prepared to deliver at pivotal moments. Meanwhile, members of your bench will gain more experience, preparing them to one day join the A team.
Even better? Once you can make more strategic project assignments, you will lessen your chances of over-servicing and A-team burnout cutting into your profits.
Projects will be delivered on time. Clients will be happy. Profits will go up.
Isn't it time you gave your A team a break?
