John Hobbs, an art director at BBH/New York was the design driver behind Issue 48 of Big Magazine, an homage to the city of Detroit. Big, which draws edit and art talent from around the world, frequently uses places as issue themes and the Detroit edition is a beautifully unglossed look at the postindustrial sadness and splendor of the Motor City. With nary a photo of Mr. Mathers, the magazine explores the vibrant music and art scene, and the hardship and hope of the city's urban emptiness and suburban sprawl. Hobbs and editor Hobey Echlin enlist the visual and literary skills of Detroit artists, musicians, photographers, writers and business owners for a compelling, stark picture of the streets, the people and the cars. Lots of cars.
