Hands-On Decks

By (TK) Published on .

Chocolate, Birdhouse, Zoo York, Enjoi, Girl and 5Boro: no, these are not the members of Fanny Pack, they're skateboard companies whose deck designs, among others, are a disposable but very distinctive graphic art form that's celebrated in a fascinating little $18.95 paperback called Boards: The Art + Design of the Skateboard, an MTV Overground Book, from Rizzoli's Universe Publishing. More than 200 color photos are abetted by artists' quotes, like this from Sean Cliver, whose "Hook-ups" series of deck designs are a sort of anime-pinup heaven: "It's the whole long and skinny thing that really gets my goat. Don't get me wrong, skateboards should not be short and fat, it's just that I believe the damn popsicle canvas may have ultimately crippled my professional life. Heck, the very idea of having to draw anything conforming to a square scares the absolute crap out of me."
